Areas of Greatest Need

Annual giving is a vital, ongoing source of support for the Friedman School. Unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund provide a critical stream of funding for areas of greatest need, such as nutrition research, student financial aid, student services, faculty and programmatic support, and school operating expenses.

These gifts enhance the school's flexibility so that it can respond quickly to unforeseen needs and new opportunities, such as developing academic programs and supporting innovative studies.

In the past year, Friedman students contributed to the following projects and initiatives, thanks in part to gifts to the Annual Fund:

  • Students in the Agriculture, Food, and Environment (AFE) program created a rooftop garden at the Josiah Quincy School in Chinatown and are integrating garden-based learning into the third-grade curriculum.
  • In the Food Policy and Applied Nutrition (FPAN) program, students collaborated with faculty on the USDA's Thrifty Food Plan, helping shape the future of U.S. policy.
  • One student spent her summer in Madagascar evaluating malnutrition in children under 5 during natural disasters—the first study of its kind.
  • A doctoral student evaluated the effect of green tea's active ingredient, EGCG, on T cell function, helping to pave the way for the scientific community to develop preventive and therapeutic strategies.

The Friedman School maintains a variety of giving societies to recognize donors who give at a particular level. To learn more, visit our leadership giving societies page.

In Their Own Words

"Supporting the School is the shared responsibility of all able alumni. Giving back is a worthy investment in the continued quality and reputation of the school, and the degrees it confers."
